Adult Recreational Legalization: Common Q&A

July 05, 2018

With the official launch of the adult recreational cannabis market right around the corner, many Organigram patients have been asking how the changes may affect them.

Recently, we announced plans to supply the adult recreational cannabis market with products under three distinct brands: The Edison Cannabis Co. (an evolution of the successful Edison Project by OGI), Ankr Organics (building on years of experience with organic cultivation) and Trailer Park Buds. To be clear, products sold under these brands are intended for recreational consumption. Organigram medical products, including flowers, blends and oils, will remain exclusive to registered medical patients.

Do you have questions about these two related, but distinct markets? We’ve compiled a list of common questions and answers based on recent patient queries and feedback you may find useful.

Q: Will I still need a medical document to purchase medical cannabis from a licensed producer like Organigram?

A: Yes. Patients who wish to purchase cannabis for medical purposes are required to obtain a medical document from a physician and have their physician or clinic submit their medical document to Organigram.

Q: Will I need a medical document to purchase cannabis at retail locations?

A: No. Cannabis which will be sold at retail locations is intended for adult recreational consumption. Those who wish to purchase recreational cannabis products will not need a medical document to do so, but must be of legal age for the province in which they are making their purchase (18 or 19 depending on the province).

Q: Can I purchase recreational cannabis products directly from Organigram?

A: No. Recreational cannabis products must be purchased through provincially licensed retail locations, through the provincially run website or where allowable from provincially licensed online providers.

Q: Can I purchase medical cannabis products at a retail location?

A: No. Medical cannabis products can only be purchased directly from Organigram or other licensed producers.

Q: I am a medical patient and plan to purchase recreational cannabis at retail locations. Can I claim these purchases as a medical expense?

A: No. Only medical cannabis purchased from Organigram or other licensed producers directly may be claimed as a medical expense at tax time.

Q: I am a medical patient and plan to purchase recreational cannabis at retail locations. Will my Compassionate Pricing or VAC benefits be applied to purchases I make at retail locations?

A: No. Compassionate Pricing and VAC benefits are only applicable to medical cannabis products purchased directly from Organigram.

Q: I have been hearing talk about a potential supply shortage in the recreational market. May there be a supply shortage in the medical market as well?

A: Though we have committed to supply the recreational market, Organigram’s patients take first priority. We have secured a supply of cannabis products for our medical patients to ensure they always have access to oil and flower products.

Q: Can Organigram’s Client Care department give me any advice on products I might purchase at recreational stores or tell me how they may affect me?

A: No. The Organigram Client Care team can only advise on Organigram's medical products and services. Patients who sign up with Organigram and remain patients will receive industry-leading, one-on-one patient care from our team. Please consult your physician for advice on your medical condition or dosage recommendation.
